Shortly after noon on Monday, Columbus Police responded to a disturbance in front of JC Penny at Leigh Mall. DICE officer Stephen Kemp arrived on scene to find 22 yr old Shannon Williams sitting on top of Omar Rashod Beard with her hands around his throat.
Williams’ mother, Angela Williams, was trying to pull her daughter off of Beard. Officers Rebecca Lomax, Paul Short, and Michael Griffin arrived shortly after and helped Kemp secure the scene. Beard acted erratically while being questioned by Kemp and the officer had to bring Beard to the ground to handcuff and get him under control. Beard suffered cuts to his elbow and face and Williams suffered a bloody nose.
Officers discovered that Beard had five warrants out for his arrest including possession of marijuana and domestic violence. A woman identifying herself as Beard’s mother attempted to calm the young man down, but Beard was beside himself with anger: “They jumped me…these mut*#fu*#@s jumped me!!” Beard exclaimed.
“Calm down, just calm down Omar, you can’t be startin’ all this” his mother said.
“You leave me alone too, just go” Beard told his mother.
“You quittin me? You quittin me? Uh-uh, I’m all you got and you’re quittin me?!! Well then- nevermind…just take him to jail- just take him” the mother said in frustration. [As EMT’s walked Beard to the waiting ambulance, the woman identified as Beard’s mother told me: “If my pictures in The Packet, I’ll sue your ass- I don’t care. Even if you’re with The Dispatch, I’ll still sue. I’ll sue your ass.” She was advised by an officer to stay away from the crime scene if she did not want to be featured in the newspaper-Ed.]
The fight allegedly began when Omar Beard got angry after he asked Williams for some money. Beard said he was just defending himself and got jumped. Williams told officers he asked for money and then began to assault her after she wouldn’t give him any. Beard initially refused medical treatment, but agreed to visit the hospital after it was discovered that he needed stitches in his cheek. Williams and Beard were both arrested and charged with domestic violence. [Officer Kemp was on scene within a minute of the dispatch from E-911. I was finishing up my sesame chicken at Golden Star in the mall when the call came in, and by the time I ran out (leaving a buddy holding the bill), Kemp was already approaching the ruckus. I’ve found that quite often domestic fights don’t result in an arrest due to lack of a witness. In this case officer Kemp would stand as the witness I’d assume.-CK]0
