About 7:45 Friday night, a Baber’s Leasing truck was involved in a wreck on Hwy 45 Alt at Hwy 82. Jamal Thompson, a Baber’s employee, was bringing the box truck from the Baber’s office in Starkville to the office in West Point. As he came off the Hwy 82 exit and merged onto Hwy 45 Alt, he looked in his rearview mirror and saw a fully loaded semi bearing down on him. After a brief pause, the big rig slammed into the back of the box truck, sending it off the right side of the highway and flipping it onto its side. As the truck flipped, the hydraulic lift gate on the back dug into the ground and was ripped from the vehicle. The semi, owned by Big M Transportation out of Blue Mountain, MS, lost control and ran off the road, just shy of hitting the box truck again. The truck ran up the hill that flanks 45 Alt, digging itself into the muddy embankment as it went. The ruined nose of the truck came to rest in a stand of trees at the top of the ridge.
Thompson escaped the wreck with no injuries, suffering only a sore neck and back. When reached for comment, he said, “I wasn’t dragging along. I was moving at a decent speed when he hit me.” The box truck had a full load of furniture inside and several items were completely destroyed in the roll-over. The truck, which was one of several new box trucks, will be totalled, as the damage was too extensive to repair.
