Columbus School Bus Involved in Accident

Friday morning around 7:45 am, Columbus Police responded to a three-car accident involving a school bus on the corner of 8th St. S. and College. A Columbus Municipal School District bus was stopped at the stop sign on 8th Ave. South, facing south, with two students on board when two vehicles collided directly in front of the school bus. Vawndaasha Willis, 17, was driving a 1999 Buick Century northbound through the intersection when she suddenly realized that portion of 8th Ave. S was a one way street. Willis told witnesses on scene that she tried to correct and head west on College, but was struck by a westbound Chrysler 300 driven by Annie Wozniak of Columbus. Wozniac told police she was trying to avoid the accident as Willis suddenly changed paths, but could not keep from the collision. Willis’ car struck the front of the bus after being hit by the Chrysler. No serious injuries were reported on scene. The two CHS students on the bus, Frank Fisher and his stepbrother Daniel Stone, were uninjured and unshaken by the ordeal.

[Packet readers may remember Daniel Stone from an incident at Applebee’s late last fall. Stone was choking on a piece of steak when Columbus Police Investigator Raymond Hackler stepped in and performed the Heimlich on Stone, freeing the meat from his windpipe. Stone’s mother Sandra said he always refers to Inv. Hackler as his “angel” – Ed]
