Columbus Main Street Director Amber Murphree Brislin listened carefully, Wednesday, as WCBI weatherman Jason Dunning gave the Midday forecast for this coming Friday night, New Years Eve. Brislin was waiting with Susan Bell to appear on Midday to talk about the big ball drop and block party scheduled for Friday night (the 3rd Annual). Dunning talked about possible severe weather and an 80 percent chance of rain. Brislin, always the optimist, isn’t buying it. Nothing against Dunning, but Amber is going with a weather.com forecast of a 30 per cent chance of rain. She likes that one much better.
I spoke with Amber Wednesday afternoon after the broadcast. Amber and Susan gave the details, but time ran short before they could give the ‘weather plan’ in case of bad weather. Amber says that plans will go on as usual..but when Friday afternoon gets here and it looks like severe weather is eminent, any cancellation plans will be announced on WCBI’s news broadcast at 5, 6 or 10. But she wants to stress that..a little rain – won’t stop no show! “Unless there’s a safety hazard present, plans will go on as usual.”
Here’s how those plans shape up: The event will take place on College Street between 4th and 5th Streets downtown. You can purchase wristbands for $10 (Prior to the event by contacting the Main Street office at 662-328-6305 or by visiting the office. Or at WCBI or The Link. You can also purchase tickets at the event starting at 8:30. Gates will open at that time as well). With your $10 wristband you will receive your New Years Eve passport. Take your passport to each participating downtown restaurant or bar (Fuhgetaboutit, Station 7, Hucks, The Elbow Room, The Princess Theater, Zachary’s and Harveys) for drink and food specials and get your passport stamped while you are there. After visiting at least 3 qualifying participants, you can then take your passport to the Block Party concert to enter a drawing that will be held right after the midnight ball drop…for a chance to win $500! Not a bad way to start the new year! (but you must be present to win)
Music will begin at 9:30 and provided by local favs, The Juke Joint Gypsies! They’ll jam until the midnight ball drop (provided, again, by Glenn Machine Works) and continue until 12:30. Sponsors include The Link, Budweiser, Glenn Machine Works, 96.1 FM WLZA and The Columbus Police Department. For more info, visit the Main Street website at www.columbusmainstreet.com0
