Since press time, we have been contacted with more information concerning this wreck. This article has the updated information.
Last Saturday, just before 9:30 pm, a call came in to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department that there had been an accident on AQ Stanley Road in Caledonia. The accident occurred when a white Chevrolet Lumina, heading south, came off the east side of the road, overcompensated, and swerved back across the road. The car was stopped when it hit a large tree on the west side of the road. The impact destroyed the driver’s side of the vehicle and warped the frame of the car, making it necessary for responders to remove the front passenger door completely to remove the injured occupants.
There were four people involved in the accident: driver Tony Davis, Joseph Ives, Crystal Whitehead and another unnamed female. Davis, who suffered a severe head injury, was unresponsive and was airlifted to the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. [He is still in a coma in the Tupelo hospital – JD] The nearest Careflight helicopter had to fly in from Meridian. A landing zone set up near the intersection of Cal-Kalola Road and Hwy 45 N in order to pick up the 22 year old. Ives suffered a broken arm, but walked away from the accident. Whitehead, who was in the back seat, was picked up by her grand parents at the scene of the wreck. The fourth passenger was taken to BMH-GT for additional care. It was discovered that all four had been drinking. When Martial Lance Luckey (the first official on scene) asked Whitehead where they were headed she replied, “The liquor store.”
The interior of the car was stained with blood from the floorboard across the seats and dashboard to the ceiling. All of the windows had broken due to the impact, and Whitehead recieved cuts to her left hand in the aftermath of the wreck.
